ELDERHOSTEL at the Coastal Retreat Center

2008 Schedule

What is Elderhostel and who is eligible to come?
elderhostel

"Elderhostel is America's first and the world's largest educational travel organization for adults 55 and over. With nearly 8,000 offerings a year in more than 90 countries, Elderhostel programs are as unique and diverse as their participants. Our expert instructors, experienced group leaders, and helpful staff create extraordinary experiences by sharing stimulating information, leading fascinating field trips and cultural excusions, and by taking care of details. As a result, our programs excite one's mind and enrich one's life. There are no grades or tests. All that's needed is an inquiring mind, an adventurous spirit, and the belief that learning and discovery are lifelong pursuits. Elderhostel is a not-for-porfit organization."

SCLRC hosts approximately 15-16 weeks of Elderhostel a year at the Coastal Retreat Center, mostly during the late fall, winter, and early spring months when the CRC is not in high demand. Typically, each Elderhostel program runs for 5 nights, and includes all of the participants meals, accommidations, and transportation to activities. Your week of Elderhostel at the CRC will involve off site excursions of charleston, on site classroom presentations, free time on the beach, delicious food, and plenty of fun and learning.

SCLRC's Former Elderhostel Coordinator, Heather Harris, did a terrific job creating successful Elderhostel programs down at the coast! Recent additions to our Elderhostel programs include the Charleston harbor of history tours. These educational excursions augment classroom courses such as: Charleston during the Revolutionary War; The Siege of Charleston (Civil War); Tidal Creeks and Marshes; and Colonial Rice Plantations of the Carolina Lowcountry.

How long has Elderhostel been running at the CRC?

The Elderhostel program at the Coastal Retreat Center began 16 years ago in October of 1991 and was brought by Herbert Loadholt when he became Coastal's Resident Director. Many programs and thousands of participants have passed through the CRC's Eldershostel program, leaving a legacy of excitement, fun, and life long learning. The program has thrived and continues to have reservations to capacity!

What people are saying about the Coastal Retreat Center's Elderhostel
elderhostel

"I returned on Friday from an Elderhostel in Charleston, S.C. and felt compelled to write and tell you what a wonderful experience it was. This session was unusual in that everything coalesced in a remarkable way. This was due, I feel, to the synergy between the Program Coordinator, the Resident Director, and the presenters, especially Ernest Shealy (Charleston Architecture), John Holenko and Hazel Ketchum."

"Our host was especially helpful and went "the extra mile" as far as finding things for us to do that were interesting, challenging and fun."

"Mr. Loadholt prepared breakfast and made sure there were newpapers available every morning. He also accompanied us on our outings and was very helpful and patient."

This was a very special Elderhostel and I believe all the staff should be congratulated. I am going to recomment this facility and it's programs to all my friends. It's what Elderhostel should be about: Education, Entertainment and Enlightenment."
