A Letter to our Youth and Youth Leaders:

Dear Youth and Youth Group Leader,
We need your help!
SC Lutheran Retreat Centers, in cooperation with LCY, is organizing a synod wide Spaghetti fundraiser September 27th to support the SCLRC Capital Campaign to renovate and improve
your Retreat Centers. Youth from both small and large congregations can participate in this event!
Your SC Lutheran Retreat Centers
SC Lutheran Retreat Centers is a ministry of the SC Synod that operates Camp Kinard in Leesville and the Coastal Retreat Center on the Isle of Palms. Camp Kinard and Coastal are the home of the LCY winter retreats and the love projects “Camp HUGG” and “Bridge Building.” Along with Lutheran groups, many more are served through SCLRC including Camp Kemo, Camp WonderHands, Orphan Foundation of America, families, choirs, senior adults, marriage retreats, other dominations and non-profit organizations. Thousands are served by our ministry each year, but due to limited space, we have to turn many away.
The Campaign
SCLRC’s Capital Campaign is titled “Building+Renewing+Believing.” This campaign strives to “Build” a solid future for this ministry with improved facilities, “Renew” the existing facilities with much needed renovation, and “Believe” in work’s God that is happening at our centers! The success of this Campaign would also allow SCLRC to add a third center in the upstate, Biggerstaff located on Lake Keowee. The additional facilities at all three retreat centers would enable us to effectively serve more of God’s people!

SC Lutheran Church Youth – That’s You!!
The SC Lutheran Youth are a big part of our ministry. The 1970’s LCY raised funds to install the pool at Camp Kinard, then the 2006 western conference LCY assisted in raising funds to renovate the pool! The work of LCY, in partnership with SCLRC, has inspired many and changed lives! We are calling on SC youth to continue their ownership of SCLRC and make their own contribution to the campaign.
Everyone Loves Spaghetti
Join Youth Groups all over SC on Sunday September 27th by conducting a Spaghetti Lunch at your church after the last worship service of the day. Encourage the youth in your congregation to work with each other and other members of the church assign “pasta chefs”, “desert makers”, etc. This can be an opportunity for your youth to engage in teamwork and congregational bonding! Your youth group can choose to do ‘pre-event ticket sales’ which will also encourage youth to reach out to their community.
Retreat Memories and Campaign Presentation
Let’s give our youth the opportunity to share their fondest memories of their retreat! The youth can also recruit members of the congregation to share. Then, the Youth will present the plans for SCLRC’s Campaign to better inform their congregation. We invite the youth to be creative in their presentation (skits, music, etc). SCLRC will supply printed campaign information and a set of architectural drawings to display. Does one of your young people have a passion for electronic media? Any youth interested in creating a media presentation will be supplied with electronic pictures and graphics.

Incentives for Youth
Participating Youth Groups will be lifted up in Synod and SCLRC publications. There will be a special free day at Camp Kinard to celebrate those who participated! Youth who sell ‘pre-event tickets’ can individually compete for ‘highest conference seller’ and win a free weekend retreat. Finally, the LCY will obtain a “Naming Opportunity” at a retreat center with a collective synod response of $25,000 or more.
The biggest incentive of all is the opportunity for SC youth to take ownership of their retreat centers.
The stewardship exercised in contributing towards the growth and development of SCLRC should be the driving force of your youth in this endeavor. This should be something fun our youth can feel great about!
Smaller Congregations
If your youth group wants to participate but feels that it is too small to conduct its own Spaghetti fundraiser, SCLRC will work to ‘partner-up’ youth from smaller congregation with larger ones. This will give all the congregations the opportunity to support their youth’s efforts on September 27th.
*The Final Push*
2009 marks the third year of SC Lutheran Retreat Centers’ synod authorized campaign as we wrap up making appeals to SC Congregations. With two years behind us, we are happy to report that we have 2.5 million dollars in pledges – Half way to our base goal of 5 million dollars! This is very exciting indeed, as our dream for “Building+Renewing+Believing” in our retreat centers can become a reality despite economic hard times. Won’t you be the final push that helps us reach our goal? The energy of our SC youth will revitalize the spirit of the campaign! I pray that your youth group will answer God’s call to action to join this synod-wide fundraiser and support SCLRC’s Capital Campaign.

Please respond with your youth group’s plans to participate.
After your group responds, additional information will follow. I am happy to answer any questions or concerns about this project. I would also be delighted to visit your Youth Group to better explain SCLRC’s Campaign.
