Major Renovations begin at Coastal for Phase One!

Phase One of renovations at Coastal began December 14th! The construction crew arrived and promptly began removing old water rotted ceiling tiles that were damaged by water leaking through the roof. Inside the center, all the flooring in the gathering areas will be replaced, the kitchen will be upgraded, and the dining hall expanded. But the best improvement to come is the new roof that will stop our leaking problems! renovations

Phase One concentrates on the exterior and gathering areas of the center. The guest room wing will be addressed in later stages. Click Here to view more photos of Development at Coastal Retreat!

Phase One Renovations Begin! A letter from our Executive Director Dallas Shealy
    December 7th, 2009

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Fling wide the door, unbar the gate!  Advent is the time of watching and waiting and preparation, and is the perfect time to begin our long-awaited renovations at Camp Kinard and Coastal Retreat Center!   How perfect is it that as we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child in our homes and congregations, we are making preparations for our future campers and guests to experience a Christ-centered environment to foster fellowship and renew faith!

Today, the first crew arrived at Camp Kinard to begin demolition in what was formally known as the “basement”.  Soon, we will have bright, attractive meeting rooms on the “pool level” complete with windows facing the pool and lake.

Site work will also improve the outside appearance and make it more accessible. Old heating and air conditioning units will be replaced and new ceiling and floor tile will make this building the show piece of Camp Kinard!

Next week, work will begin at the Coastal Retreat Center.  A new roof line and HVAC system will put a halt to the on-going leaking problem. There will be a roof added to the outdoor deck, making this once sun beaten area a shaded outdoor oasis. The kitchens will get a total renovation as well as the dining room and lobby areas. On the second floor the meeting rooms will be redone with a coffee bar added and new windows so that we will finally have an ocean view from our retreat center!

We will be posting pictures on our website on a regular basis.  Please visit www.sclrc.com/campaign  to keep up to date with our progress.    If you are on Facebook, join our CAUSE "Renovate SC Lutheran Retreat Centers" and recieve updates!

These renovations are possible because of the generous gifts of so many of our supporters.  We extend special thanks to our congregations, our youth groups, our WELCA groups, our LMM groups and our individual donors for making this dream finally become a reality.

If you are already supporting us, THANK YOU!  If you have not yet made a gift toward the campaign, please consider doing so.  Join the exciting ground breaking efforts by making a "Phase One Building Block Pledge." Perhaps you are still looking for the perfect gift for someone who loves our Retreat Centers.  Consider making a gift in their honor.  You can make a gift online at www.sclrc.com/giving.  Be sure to designate if you wish for someone to receive notification before Christmas.

This Advent is truly an exciting time to be the Church as we experience God’s Work, Our Hands at your South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers.  Raise a shout of holy mirth and praise our God and Lord!  God IS with us!  Amen!

    Together in Christ,

    Dallas J. Shealy, AIM

Phase One of Renovation Construction Announced

    Coastal Exterior Interor Plans
View Phase One overview and "Phase One Building Block" Pledge Form

The Capital Campaign "Building+Renewing+Believing" for the SC Lutheran Retreat Centers has been active for the past 2 years raising funds for renovations and new development at Camp Kinard, Coastal Retreat Center, and Biggerstaff Retreat Center. Groups and individuals from 54 Lutheran congregations in SC have contributed to toward this amazing effort. Half way into the campaign, the downturn of the American economy brought interesting challenges to the renovation efforts at your SC Lutheran Retreat Centers.

Faced with new realities of the financial situation, the Board of Trustees of SCLRC decided to reevaluate and reprioritize how renovations at our facilities would take place. After consultation with our construction agency and much prayerful consideration, we have adopted a phased approach that allows us to do renovation in stages. The positive side of the economic downturn is that construction prices have gone way down and has given us the opportunity to get more done with the funds we already have! Now that the busy summer season is over and winter is upon us, the time to renovate is now.

Earlier this month the Board of Trustees voted to move forward with implementing plans to begin Phase One this winter! These renovations will include improvements at Camp Kinard and Coastal that will greatly enhance the experience of groups on retreat, and possibly provide space for increased usage and revenue at our centers.

Click Here to learn the details of Phase One Renovations and to see architectural drawings of planned renovations.

"Building+Renewing+Believing" Campaign has already raised much of the funds needed to complete Phase One! With the help of more donors, SCLRC will be able to cover the costs of Phase One and lead us towards future renovations to include Biggerstaff Retreat House, Coastal's bedroom wing, and additional meeting facilities at Camp Kinard! SCLRC has developed a pledge program to complete Phase One named "Phase One Building Blocks." This program gives you, the donor, options to support Phase One through small gifts made over four years.

Click Here to learn more and print out a "Phase One Building Block" Pledge Form

Many thanks to all those who have and continue to support the Campaign. Your faithful stewardship of your retreat centers ensures these places apart for generations to come! This is truly an exciting time as we anticipate renovations to begin soon!

    Summer SPLASH at Camp Kinard
    July 1, 2009
    Summer Splash

Fifty children from Summer SPLASH, a program for refugee children conducted through a partnership with Reformation Columbia and LFS of the Carolinas, are visiting Camp Kinard today to enjoy swimming, playing and picnicking.  These children attend a 6-week day camp that provides them a safe environment to become acclimated and develop their skills in subjects such as English and Math.  Coming to camp gives the kids a chance to have fun and enjoy playing with their fellow campers.  This is the second summer for this partnership between Camp Kinard and Summer SPLASH, and the expenses for the day were funded by a multicultural outreach grant from ELCA Outdoor Ministries.

Big plans afoot for Lutheran property on Lake Keowee

    By Carlos Galarza
    November 29, 2008 - 12:00 a.m. EST

WALHALLA — The St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation has embarked again on a journey of faith.

At a time when the entire nation is faced with economic uncertainty, St. John’s members are confidently bankrolling a project that would transform their five-acre Lake Keowee hideaway into a major lodging and activities center that would attract visitors from across the state and beyond.

The project is being undertaken in partnership with the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers (SCLRC), an outreach of the South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

SCLRC already operates two successful sprawling retreat centers, Camp Kinard near Batesville-Leesburg in the center of the state and Coastal Retreat Center on the Isle of Palms near Charleston. St. John’s pristine hideaway, Biggerstaff, would become SCLRC’s third retreat center.

So far, St. John’s faithful have pledged $1.2 million toward the Biggerstaff project. SCLRC’s dream goal of collecting $7.5 million in donations would not only build a $3.7 million, 60-bed retreat house and center at Biggerstaff, but $3.8 million additions and upgrades to the Kinard and Coastal centers as well.

SCLRC spokeswoman Amy Catalino said the South Carolina Synod authorized a three-year fund-raising campaign for the three projects. The clock started ticking in May 2007, and the campaign ends in May 2010. Catalino said much of the work could be done even if SCLRC falls short of its dream goal.

“We could do a lot with $5 million,” she said. “That would pretty much allow us to do what we want to do at the three centers.”

Catalino said money is coming in by way of checks, but also by way of stocks and estate arrangements. She said that to help people budget their gifts, donations may be spread out over a maximum of five years.

“We’re still seeing positive pledges,” Catalino said. “The Lord is calling on people to give. We won’t deny them giving in the way they think best to give.”

It is a gift that keeps on giving. The Kinard and Coastal retreat centers are popular destination spots for camping, activities and special programs. They are used by churches and individuals of all denominations. Catalino said often are booked a year in advance because of the demand for the facilities.

Ray Burroughs, resident director of St. John’s Biggerstaff retreat center, said the Lake Keowee property will be just as popular. In fact, he said it already is.

Burroughs said churches of all denominations having been booking the picturesque site for day trips, overnight camping, special services, baptisms and weddings.

The valuable piece of property was donated to St. John’s Lutheran Church by Samuel Biggerstaff in 1980. Burroughs said that Biggerstaff wanted the property to be enjoyed by the faithful for fellowship.

“People have told me that they feel the presence of God by just being here,” Burroughs said.

Rip-Wrap shore conservation finishing at Biggerstaff
    October 13, 2008

Rip Wrap 1 Rip Wrap 2 Rip Wrap 3

A shoreline preservation project was started in September 2008 at Biggerstaff Retreat Center and is now in the finishing stages.  The explosion of development on Lake Keowee, and the boat traffic that accompanied it, created erosion problems along the peninsula’s shore.  In recent years there was a sizable loss of land due to this problem, particularly the waters edge in front of the worship area.  A rip-wrap (stone covering) was installed to protect the shoreline from further damage.  In more sheltered areas of the shoreline, bio-engineering was used to create a more natural means of protection.

This project is the largest of its kind to take place on Lake Keowee.  Due to the ecological impact of this project, all restoration had to take place from the water using a barge.  The final cost to protect the nearly 1700 feet of shoreline was approximately $65,000.

The project was funded through pledges and gifts from members of St. Johns Lutheran, Walhalla, as well as fund raisers including the sale of memorial stones (to be placed in gardens and walkways), Spring Sing, and a Low Country Boil.  Many thanks to all of those who made this preservation project possible to keep Biggerstaff in tact for generations to come!

The sale of memorial stones is continuing as a means for beautification after the restoration.  To contribute to this project click here for a stone order form.
A donation of $100 will secure a memorial stone.

Refugee Children of Summer SPLASH visit Camp Kinard
    July 2, 2008

SPLASH Pool SPLASH Slide SPLASH Picnic

On Wed, July 2, 2008 a group of 50 refugee and immigrant children currently residing in the Columbia metropolitan area came to Camp Kinard to enjoy a day of swimming, playing and picnicking.  These children are part of Summer SPLASH (Students Playing, Learning and Staying Healthy) which is a program partnership with Reformation Lutheran Church of Columbia and Lutheran Family Services (LFS) of the Carolinas.  The counselors/mentors of SPLASH are students from Newberry College.  There were also youth volunteers from Pisgah Lutheran of Lexington.  The day at Camp Kinard was provided in part by a multicultural outreach grant from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Outdoor Ministries.

This wonderful group of kids ranged in age from 4-14 and represented 7 nations:  America, Burma, China, Iraq, Liberia, Mexico and Somalia.  These children attend a 6-week day camp that provides them a safe environment to become acclimated and develop their skills in subjects such as English and Mathematics.  Every Wednesday the children enjoy a field trip, and this particular Wednesday brought them to enjoy the great outdoors at Camp Kinard near Batesburg-Leesville.

“You could really see the kids connecting with each other when they were playing at camp.  It was as though the cultural and language barriers didn’t exist,” said Amy Catalino, SCLRC employee.  “This day was the culmination of the collaborative efforts of Reformation, LFS, Newberry College, SCLRC, and ELCA outdoor ministries.  It’s a joy when these agencies can work together for the benefit of these beautiful children,” stated Dallas Shealy, SCLRC Executive Director.

Plans are in place to continue this partnership between SCLRC and Summer SPLASH.  In addition to funding through requested grants, there will be opportunity for individuals to contribute through Gifts of Hope, an advent alternative gift giving program of the SC Lutheran Synod.  To learn more about contributing through Gifts of Hope visit www.GiftsofHopeSC.org.

Building+Renewing+Believing: Major Renovation Begins at Camp Kinard
    June 25, 2008

Renovations to Cottage Roofs Completed Metal Roof

A special report of our Executive Director Dallas Shealy:

Plans for renovation to Camp Kinard as part of our Building+Renewing+Believing campaign included new metal roofs for the cottages to provide an updated "cabana" look to theses buildings.  Thanks to a literal act of God and to the generosity of Jeff Courtney from Fabral, Inc, these new roofs became a reality much sooner than expected!

Many of you will remember that in March 2008, a significant thunder and hail storm went through Batesburg-Leesville.   Quite a number of our Lutheran Youth were on retreat at Camp Kinard during that storm and watched golf-ball sized hail fall from the sky!   Some may have seen this weather as an inconvience, but for Camp Kinard, it was a gift!   The hail damage on our already-in-need-of-replacement roofs provided a fairly significant insurance settlement.  And thanks to Jeff Courtney of Fabral, Inc (member of Reformation, Columbia) who was able to get some materials and labor donated and at reduced prices and thanks to the generosity of many of you who have already given to our Capital Campaign and designated your gifts for Camp Kinard, we were able to go ahead and replace the roofs!

With these new roofs, we are taking the first steps in Building+Renewing+Believing!  Thanks be to God!

Camp Kinard welcomes Camp Wonder Hands for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing- June 16, 2008

Camp WonderHands Camp WonderHands National Anthem
Camp Wonder Hands Director E.T. Taylor sings the National Anthem as campers practice signing the words for the Columbia Blowfish Baseball game Tuesday night, June 17,2008.

“Experience the Wonder” of Camp Wonder Hands, a program of the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is being held June 15-20th near Batesburg-Leesville at Camp Kinard.  Camp Wonder Hands is a five day, four night summer camp created specifically for kids who are deaf and hard of hearing.  The mission of the camp is to create an environment where there is a deaf and hard of hearing majority, all communication needs are met, and campers experience positive deaf and hard of hearing role models.  Each camper attends on a scholarship provided by Children’s Hospital or private, civic and corporate donations. There is no cost to the family.

This summer marks the 12th year of CWH, and its 10th summer at Camp Kinard.  This year there are 35 deaf and hard of hearing campers and 49 volunteer staff members to meet their needs.  There are approximately 1,600 deaf and hard of hearing children in SC and, with the financial support of the community, CWH hopes to expand to service more of these special children.

A new teen program was introduced this year to provide 16 and 17 year olds a week at camp to focus on job preparation, interviewing, going to college, and making decisions for their future.  The Teen Program Coordinator Todd Dipner, a hard of hearing physical therapist, is overjoyed to be a part of the program and believes there is much the new program can offer the 6 teens attending CWH.  “I have a lot of life experience that I can pass on, and this opportunity that Marolyn gave me is something I can take with me the rest of my life.”  Marolyn Amick, the founder of CWH, said that starting a teen program has always been a dream and this year the funding finally came through to make it a reality.  “We want our kids to go to college and know they can be successful just like everyone else.”
Organizations such as Columbia Apartment Association, Skate land, AT&T, and Columbia Inferno have contributed greatly towards this year’s success.  CWH would also like to recognize the various business owners in Batesburg-Leesville for their generous support and Evie Robertson for organizing the support of these businesses.  Jimmy James, the general sales manager of the Columbia Blowfish Baseball Team, also raised funds to have CWH attend a Blowfish game with unlimited concessions for the campers.  At the Blowfish baseball game CWH Director, E.T. Taylor, sang the National Anthem while campers signed the lyrics to the crowd.  If you are interested in supporting or sponsoring Camp Wonder Hands, contact Diane Howard, Palmetto Health Foundation Division Director of Major Gifts at 803-434-2832.

Camp Kinard is honored to have been the home of Camp Wonder Hands for the past 10 years.  “Facilitating this community outreach is so important to our ministry.  CWH is a terrific and inspiring group,” stated SCLRC Executive Director Dallas Shealy.

Camp Kinard is a facility of the SC Lutheran Retreat Centers (SCLRC), a ministry of the SC Synod of the ELCA, located at 6053 Two Notch Road, Batesburg-Leesville.  To learn about Camp Kinard please call 803-532-3183 or visit online at www.sclrc.com.

Camp Kemo at Camp Kinard- June 9, 2008

    Pirate Sing-a-long

Camp Kemo, a week-long overnight camp offered by the Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders of Palmetto Health Richland, is celebrating it’s 29th year at Camp Kinard near Batesburg-Leesville.  CAMP KEMO is designed for kids 5-18 years of age that are undergoing cancer treatment to have a week of camp where they can just be a kid and have fun. The theme this summer, "Pirates of the Kemobeean” has transformed Camp Kinard into a treasure island with pirate ships, treasure, and happy pirate campers.

This year Camp Kemo has over 100 campers, dozens of counselors, and countless other volunteers.  “Just about everyone involved has volunteered their time to be here at camp,” stated a volunteer from the Lexington County Sheriff’s office.  There are also several doctors and nurses from the Children's Center onsite to meet the medical needs of the campers as well as a transportable chemotherapy unit.

Activities for this week, June 9th-13th 2008, began 10am Monday morning with a parade in downtown Columbia’s Five Points.  Many members of the community came to see the campers ride on festive floats created by sponsors of the camp.  The rest of the week at Camp Kinard will be filled with lots of fun activities including motorcycle rides, rock climbing, swimming, sing-a-longs, treasure hunt, pirate cooking, hayrides, kayaking, crafts, Gilbert Fire Dept water sprinkler and much more!

Volunteers make big improvements to Camp Kinard this Spring- May 7, 2008

This past spring has been an exciting time of renewal at Camp Kinard near Batesburg-Leesville! Many volunteer groups from all over the region have put many hours of volunteer work into projects that make our camp even more enjoyable. The basketball/tennis court has seen major improvement thanks to Gerald Schultz who sawed through the asphalt to pull up overgrown tree roots, and LMM volunteers from Reformation Lancaster that filled in the potholes, installed backdrop fences and painted the tennis net poles.  Reformation LMM also built up a barrier and planter around our picnic pavilion and worked on our ropes challenge course wall!  The LMM from Mount Calvary Johnston purchased and installed new parts in Kinard’s Massey Ferguson Tractor that will pull the hay wagon around camp!  Even a crew of out of state Lutherans came down from St. Luke Monroe NC to work on installing doors on the bathrooms at the outpost campgrounds, doing spring cleaning, and donated a tree limb chainsaw!  Along with church groups that have volunteered, we have had a number of individuals do projects, including Lutheran sponsored boy scouts needing to complete an eagle scout project.  Thanks to these Eagle Scout hopefuls, Camp Kinard now has 2 new sand volleyball courts, new railing for steep cement walkway going downhill by the cottages, and new pleasant park areas around camp!  David Warfield, of Reformation Lancaster, made and donated iron crosses that are now displayed in the lodge village and dining hall. Larry Catalino of Smyrna, Delaware installed wireless internet access in the lodge conference room! Larry also transported a pool table to Camp Kinard that was donated by Susan & John McColgan. The pool table now provides indoor recreation in the downstairs meeting room of the dining hall!

Camp Kinard invites you to visit and see the new improvements around camp!  Your camp is blossoming everyday thanks to the love and devotion of the volunteers of our synod, many of whom provide the financial means to do these projects!  Many thanks to all our volunteers and supporters for making Your SC Lutheran Retreat Centers an even better place for folks to encounter the glory of God’s creation!

Coastal Retreat Center Partners with Methodists to build Elderly Transportable Cottage- April 20, 2008

ET Coastal ET at Coastal ET coastal

First United Methodist Church, located next door to Coastal on the Isle of Palms, built an Elderly Transportable Cottage (ET) for the United Methodist Relief Center (UMRC) through a partnership with Point Hope United Methodist and SCLRC.  Coastal was able to provide its paved basketball court as a construction site for this housing project.  These transportable housing units are built and donated to UMRC to fill the need for safe, warm and dry housing for elderly persons of SC who live alone in dismal conditions.  These homes are constructed on mobile home frames and can be transported to the home site, connected to water, sewer and electricity and resided in until the recipient is no longer able to live alone.  The ET can then be refurbished and relocated to another home site.

“I came over to talk to the folks at the Lutheran Retreat Center, and I asked Herbert if we could use the shuffleboard court on their property to build this ET Cottage,” explained Pat Neely, head of the project for First United.  “First he told me ‘No, I can’t do that.’ I was really disappointed, but then Herbert said ‘You can’t use the shuffleboard court, but how about the big basketball court?’  I was overjoyed!  This was really the perfect location to do this project.”

The ET project began in January 2008 and through the work of volunteers on Saturdays and some weekdays, was completed in April 2008.   First United and Point Hope United Methodist Church held a dedication ceremony at the site on April 13th where many volunteers and supporters celebrated the cottage’s completion.

“We want to thank First United for the opportunity to partner in this worthwhile project,” stated Amy Catalino, Director of Marketing, representing SCLRC at the dedication.  “We are all God’s children and should work together to do God’s work for his people.”

First United may be doing another ET housing project in the winter of 2009, and if they do the Coastal Retreat Center will again provide the basketball court for the construction site.

See pictures of the ET Cottage and the dedication ceremony!

    2008 Update, “Building+Renewing+Believing” Campaign - Jan 7th, 2008

Greetings from your South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers!  As we move our SC Synod authorized campaign into 2008 we wanted to keep you updated on the campaign’s activities, approach and progress.

Activities:   Recently, Campaign Chair Porter Kinard and his wife Memi hosted our Campaign Executive Cabinet (CEC) at the Forest Lake Country Club for dinner where they received an overview of the campaign, review of the expectations as CEC members and a wonderful time of fellowship.

The evening was a splendid affair in every way.  Our CEC membership includes all of our Synod’s current and retired Bishops/Presidents, the retired Executive Directors of the Retreat Centers, and other current and former officers and lay leaders who endorse our ministry and will help to assure our campaign success.  We are pleased to announce the following people are members of our CEC:

The Rev. James W. Addy, Ann C. Alexander, The Rev. Dr. James Aull, Marcia M. Ballentine, The Rev. Dr. Herman Cauble, The Rev. David W. Coffman, The Rev. J. Harry Crout, The Rev. Susan J. Crowell, The Rev. Dr. James Crumley, Jr., The Rev. Dr. David Donges, Raymond L. Hendrix, Jr., DeLouris M. Hollinger, J. Larry Kyzer, The Rev. Dr. Larry S. Long, Sheriff James R. Metts, AIM Thomas J. O’Brien, and The Rev. R. Delano Ricard (posthumously).

Approach:  Unlike previous Synod campaigns that often focus on “fair share” or congregation assignments, SCLRC’s campaign is based on a fundraising partnership with congregations.  This approach allows congregations to raise significant funds for internal congregation needs while also participating significantly in the SCLRC “Building+Renewing+Believing” Campaign.

This process/approach is creating exciting results.  If we have not yet worked with your congregation we look forward to the opportunity.  If you would return the attached congregation Committee form it would be helpful to know you are looking for our call.

Results: The end of 2007 has seen our fund-raising total exceed $2,000,000.  While we are ecstatic about these results, we feel as though we have only just begun and the real potential lies ahead of us as we work with more and more congregations.  In fact, we expect to raise 10-20 million dollars in the Synod with our partnership approach.  This will assure us of attaining our goal of 5-7.5 million dollars for the Retreat Centers.

We look forward to working with you and your congregation and keeping you updated on our exciting progress.  There IS enough!

    New Year’s Blessings!

    Dallas J. Shealy, AIM
    Executive Director

Building+Renewing+Believing Announces Campaign Executive Cabinet- Dec 17, 2007

On Thursday, November 29, 2007, a group of prominent South Carolina Lutherans gathered to accept the challenge of serving as the Campaign Executive Cabinet for the Building+Renewing+Believing campaign of SCLRC.  Campaign Chair Porter Kinard, along with his wife Memi, hosted the first gathering of this influential group at the Forest Lake Country Club in Columbia.  Executive Director Dallas Shealy noted that “the willingness of these people to serve in this capacity is a testimony to the importance of camping and retreat ministry in our Synod.”  The group includes the current Bishop of the synod as well as all the retired bishops/presidents, both retired Executive Directors of the Retreat Centers, several current and former officers of the Synod and other clergy and lay leaders.

At the reception, Executive Cabinet members were briefed on the plans for the campaign, how the campaign will move forward, and what their roles as Executive Cabinet members will be.  Much enthusiasm for the campaign was shared among those in attendance, with many sharing how the Retreat Centers had been part of their faith development.  Camp Kemo, A New Road, and the Rostered Leaders Spouses Retreat, were among the ongoing programs that were lifted up by the attendees.  Bishop David Donges stressed that the SC Synod is blessed with institutional ministries, and of all these important expressions of the church, SCLRC is the only institution that gets no federal or state funds and is supported solely by SC Synod benevolence, congregational and individual gifts and user fees.

Chairperson Porter Kinard and Executive Director Dallas Shealy are pleased to announce the following as the Building + Renewing + Believing Campaign Executive Cabinet:
The Rev. James W. Addy, Ann C. Alexander, The Rev. Dr. James Aull, Marcia M. Ballentine, The Rev. Dr. Herman Cauble, The Rev. David W. Coffman, The Rev. J. Harry Crout, The Rev. Susan J. Remarkable first congregational response to Building+Renewing+Believing Campaign - Nov 1, 2007

SC Lutheran Retreat Centers’ Capital Campaign Building + Renewing + Believing received magnificent support from the first congregational appeal of its campaign in September of 2007.  St. John’s Lutheran Church of Walhalla, SC pledged to contribute in excess of 1.2 million dollars to assist in building facilities at the Biggerstaff Retreat Center located on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Keowee in Seneca, SC.  Biggerstaff will become the third South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Center through the partnering of St. John’s Walhalla and SCLRC, in which the management of the site will be entrusted to SCLRC.   “St. John’s recognizes how important synod and institutional ministries are to the life of the church and full heartedly support SCLRC and its capital campaign,” explains Rev. David Coffman, pastor of St. John’s Walhalla.  The approach St. John’s used to appeal for funds involved forming a congregational campaign committee, conducting temple talks, providing an informative mailing about intended development, and finally asking congregational members for their pledges.  “The remarkable response from St. John’s is truly a testament of their good stewardship,” exclaimed SCLRC Executive Director Dallas Shealy.

“Our approach is different from other institutional campaigns,” stated Bob Fuzy, SCLRC’s Campaign Counsel.  “SCLRC is working in partnership with congregations to help raise funds not only for our campaign, but also for their identified congregational needs.”  Among others, SCLRC is partnering with St. Luke’s Prosperity for their “Legacy Initiative” and Saint Luke Florence for their “Past, Present, Future” Initiative.  Congregations are excited about the possibilities of meeting congregational needs and advancing retreat ministry within the SC Synod.

The Building + Renewing + Believing Campaign will be raising funds in order to grow and expand SCLRC ministry with new facilities and renovations at the Coastal Retreat Center on the Isle of Palms, Camp Kinard of the Midlands in Batesburg-Leesville, and now Biggerstaff of the Upstate in Seneca.  With momentum such as this, SCLRC believes that the goal of 7.5 million dollars from the SC Synod is very obtainable.

Trinity Columbia Sending and Sowing with generous gift to SCLRC - Oct 10, 2007

Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, SC made a pledge of $50,000 to be given to the SC Lutheran Retreat Centers upon the completion of the sale of the church’s property.  After 25 years, Trinity Lutheran has closed its doors and disbanded as a congregation due to lack of finances and membership.  This small congregation on the northeastern side of Columbia decided that the legacy of their church family would live on through donations to other Lutheran and Christian ministries and institutions.

Trinity held a special “Sending and Sowing” service September 30th, where the congregation presented the various institutions with their intended gift.  The service was led by Trinity’s pastor Rev Delores Watson and presentation of gifts was made by congregational council president.  Among the recipients, in addition to South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers, were other Lutheran institutions such as Lutheran Homes, Newberry College, and the South Western Diocese of Tanzania.  “Even in death, there is life,” Rev Mel Amundson declared in his address from the SC Synod.

“We are very appreciative of this gift, and we will use it in a way that will serve God’s people and honor Trinity’s legacy,” stated Larry Hamrick, Camp Kinard Resident Director.  “This gift will make a tremendous difference for the people we serve at SCLRC through church retreats, congregational gatherings, summer camps, and special needs camps,” explained Amy Catalino, director of marketing and public relations.

The $50,000 intended gift from Trinity go toward SCLRC's Capital Campaign BUILDING + RENEWING + BELIEVING that will provide for renovations and new contruction at the current retreat centers as well as add on a third retreat center in Seneca, SC.

Kinard, has stepped forward to lead SC Lutheran Retreat Centers in its journey.  Porter is a ‘62 graduate of Newberry College, a former Chairperson of the Newberry College Board of Trustees, and co-owner and founder of the building and development business VIP Developers Inc.  He and his wife, Dr. Memi Kinard, are members of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Columbia and share a passion for outdoor ministry as both were involved with Lutheran camps since childhood.  “My father was one of the first supporters of Lutheran Camps.  He worked hard to bring outdoor ministry camps to South Carolina,” said Kinard.  The Kinards and their church have been long time supporters of SCLRC.  Incarnation donated the first lodge building to Camp Kinard.  Executive Director Dallas Shealy is thrilled with Kinard’s involvement.  “Who better to lead this campaign than the son of the namesake of our first retreat center?  Porter is wonderfully dedicated and passionate about the mission of SCLRC.”  Kinard is especially interested in providing for future generations.  “Church related and supported camp is good.  We need to make people comfortable when they come to camp and retreat.  This campaign will ensure that SCLRC can continue for generations to come.”  For campaign plans, architectural drawings, and updates visit www.sclrc.com/campaign.php
